What is the gold calculator?

Gold Calculator is a tool used to find out the value of your gold on the basis of the latest gold rates. It has different weighing units like grams, penny weights, ounces, and troy ounces. While calculating the Price, keep in mind you must know the type of your gold. It can be 18 karat (according to the percentage of pure gold in your jewelry) to 24 karat (pure gold).

How to calculate the gold price?

It's very easy to find out the value of gold with the help of the Gold Value Calculator. For the Calculation, you need three things:

  • Weight
  • Purity (it's the pure gold in your jewelry)
  • Latest Price (also known as spot prices, Price of gold on the date of your Calculation)

If you know the weight (grams/ penny weight/ Oz/ Otz) and purity (karat level, 14k, 18k, 20k, 22k, 24k), you can easily calculate the value of gold.

What is Weight?

The weight of gold means actually how heavy the gold is. The number that a scale shows. While buying or selling the gold, don't be deceived by Jewellar in terms of weight. The weight of gold is of three types:

  • Gross weight: whole item on the scale with stones, beads and bricks.
  • Net Gold weight: Weight of gold without stones and beads
  • Fine (pure) gold weight: actual amount of gold inside your jewelry

Any small scale can be used to measure the weight of your gold. If you are unsure or feeling suspicious about the scale, you must visit a reputable jewelry store.

Caution: Keep in mind that different regions of the world use different units of gold, although the SI unit of gold is Kg. In South Asian Countries, units like gram, milligram, tola, Masha, and Ratti are used. While some other countries use the Troy Ounce. One more thing: don't mix the Ounce with Troy Ounce. Always buy the gold in the unit you know well. Do an estimate calculation with the help of our gold calculator to know the round Price of your gold weight. Here are some conversions for your convenience:

  • Grams → tola: g × 0.085735
  • Tola → grams: tola × 11.663804
  • Grams → ozt: g × 0.0321507
  • Ozt → grams: ozt × 31.1034768
  • Grams → dwt: g × 0.643015
  • Dwt → grams: dwt × 1.555174

Purity in gold price calculator

When you are buying gold, have a look at a stamp showing purity like 750. Purity means how much of the piece is real gold. Gold is a soft metal; it is not possible to make jewelry from pure gold. So, most of the jewelry is a mix of gold and some other metals like silver, nickel, zinc, etc. Pure gold is 24 karat. (24 karat ~ 99.9 %); 22k (~91.7%), 18k (75%) and 14k (58.5%).

Let's understand it with an example: If a ring of weight 5 g has a stamp of 22k with a mark of 916. Pure gold in it will be 5 x 22/24 = 4.58 g and %age of other metals will be 9.3%. The same applies to the tola if a ring with a 0.50 tola weight with stamp 917 of purity will be calculated as 0.5 x 18/24 = 0.375 tola.

In short, purity% x total weight = fine gold. There are two purity scales for gold. Karat and fineness. Karat divides gold into 24 parts. For example, 18/24 parts gold = 75% gold. Fineness tells the purity part per 1000. It means 750/1000 = 75% gold. In simple words, if your piece were divided into 1000 equal "parts" by weight, 750 parts are pure gold, remaining parts are other metals for strength.

18k 750 fineness
75% 75% gold and 25% other metals to harder the jewelry
22k 916 or 917 fineness
91.6% 91% gold and 8-9% impurities. Used commonly in fine quality jewelry making
24k 999 or 999.9 fineness
99.9% Pure form of gold in the form of gold bars

Spot Price / Current Market Price

Current Market Price is the benchmark price used by traders, Jewellers, per Troy Ounce (ozt). It moves up and down during the day. You use this spot price to find out the value of your gold. You can find the Price per gram or Price per tola.

Value of gold = (Weight in troy ounces) × (Purity fraction) × (Spot price per one troy ounce)

For example, if you have a piece of 0.25 ozt with purity 22k and the spot price per troy ounce is 1033905.79, it will be:

Value of gold = 0.25 × 22/24 × 1033905.79
Value of Gold = 0.2291666667 × 1033905.79
Value of gold = 236,936.74

What is the Formula for the Calculation of Gold Value?

The formula for the Calculation of the Gold value is given below:

Gold Value = weight x purity x rate of gold

For example, for the calculation price of 5 grams of 20k gold:

Gold Value= 5 x 20/24 x current gold price in USD

Gold Value Calculator uses the latest Price and you can find out the Price of gold in different amounts, purity and units.

Conclusion

I used the calculator and came to the conclusion that if you want a quick and reliable way to check the scrap or melt value of your gold, this gold calculator does the job well. But keep in mind, the actual selling price from a jeweler's shop will usually be lower because they'll add in making charges, losses, and their own margins. With advantages, there are some disadvantages to the calculator, too. It doesn't have options of tola, masha and ratti. It doesn't offer all the units used all over the world.
